Zinc is the recovery mineral that quietly governs three things athletes care about: immune defense, hormones, and tissue repair. Train hard, sweat a lot, and you lose zinc — and a shortfall shows up as more colds, slower recovery, and blunted hormones.
Here is what zinc does, why the bisglycinate form is the smart pick, and how to dose it without overdoing it.
What Zinc Does
Zinc is a cofactor for hundreds of enzymes. The athlete-relevant roles:
- Immune function — zinc is essential for immune cells; deficiency leaves you more prone to infection.
- Hormones — zinc supports healthy testosterone production.
- Tissue repair & protein synthesis — it is involved in wound healing and building new tissue.
- Antioxidant defense — it helps manage the oxidative stress of hard training.
Why Athletes Run Low
Zinc is lost through sweat, and hard training increases turnover. Diets low in red meat, shellfish, and seeds (or high in phytate-rich grains and legumes that bind zinc) make a shortfall more likely.
- A review noted exercise increases zinc and magnesium losses, and that correcting a deficit appears to improve strength and muscle metabolism (Lukaski, 2000).
- Endurance athletes and those restricting calories or eating plant-heavy diets are at higher risk.

Why Bisglycinate

- Zinc oxide — poorly absorbed and common in bargain products.
- Zinc sulfate / piccolinate / citrate — reasonable options, though sulfate is more likely to cause stomach upset.
For consistent daily use, bisglycinate is the easiest on the gut.
How to Take It
- Dose: Around 15-30 mg of elemental zinc per day for general support. More is not better.
- Timing: With food if it upsets your stomach; away from coffee and high-calcium meals, which can blunt absorption.
- Pair with copper: Long-term high-dose zinc can deplete copper. If supplementing daily for months, choose a product with a little copper (or take a modest dose).
- Food first: Oysters, red meat, shellfish, and pumpkin seeds are excellent dietary sources.
A Word of Caution
Zinc has a real upper limit. Chronic high doses (think 50+ mg/day for long periods) can cause copper deficiency, immune issues, and gut upset — the opposite of what you want. Stick to sensible doses, and treat zinc as a gap-filler, not something to megadose. If you suspect deficiency, a blood test and a doctor's input beat guessing.
