Feeling gassed may be the symptom. Posterior-chain control, knee capacity, force transfer, true engine channel deficits or power expression may be the constraint that must move first.

Repeat force is not isolated. Posterior-chain control and knee capacity constrain how hard you can safely express and absorb under density. Force transfer organises output through the chain. Athletic power is what you are trying to keep expressing when the engine holds.

Very short, maximal or near-maximal efforts where phosphagen pathways dominate — power of the hit and capacity to hold quality across brief alactic exposures.

Lactic / high-output

High-output work under rising metabolic stress — glycolytic power (how hard) and capacity (how long quality holds under that stress).

Gate 5 — Athletic Power — is about expressing force: starting power, RFD, ballistic and reactive qualities that create peak outputs.

Gate 2 — Athletic Engine — is about producing, recovering and repeating high output so those expressions still exist later in the bout, half or shift.

An athlete can look explosive in a fresh test and still be engine-limited when density rises. Confusing peak with repeat is how “I feel fit” becomes late-game collapse.

  • Engine work supports — and sometimes constrains — power expression

Limitation profiles

Where engines usually break.

Alactic-deficient

Short maximal efforts fade early or never reach true peak intent — phosphagen power/capacity under-trained or chronically under-rested.

Glycolytic-deficient

High-output quality collapses when metabolic stress rises — cannot hold force under lactic demand that sport still requires.

Aerobic-support-deficient

Recovery between efforts is slow; tempo base cannot reload the next high-output action — “cardio” may exist as junk volume without support for repeat force.

Repeat-output-deficient

One big effort looks fine; the third and seventh do not. Incomplete-recovery repeatability is the missing quality.

Fight-density-deficient

General fitness does not map to rounds, clinch density, explosive exchanges and between-round recovery that combat actually uses.

Sport-schedule conflict

Conditioning methods ignore the athlete’s real work:rest profile — combat intervals copied onto field athletes (or the reverse).

Peak / repeat confusion

Training only Gate 5 expression or only “hard cardio” without distinguishing what must peak versus what must repeat.

Modality-as-architecture

Treating AirBike, row or run as the engine itself instead of as method families inside a channel model.

INTENT FIRST

Name the channel before naming the toy. Max alactic, glycolytic high-output, aerobic support and repeat-sprint each need different effort and rest logic.

REST IS PART OF THE QUALITY

Full recovery protects peak alactic power. Incomplete recovery trains repeatability. Mixing them by accident trains neither well.

STOPPING RULES

Stop or regress when output quality, technique or composure collapses beyond the session’s standard — more suffering is not more engine.

DENSITY MATCHES SPORT

Round length, shift length, exchange clusters and between-effort gaps should resemble the athlete’s real schedule when transfer is the goal.

TRANSFER IS EVIDENCE

Gym watts matter only if competition-shaped repeatability improves. Supporting Gates can still limit what the engine can express.

PHOSPHAGEN

SHORT MAXIMAL WORK IS A CHANNEL — NOT A WARM-UP.

Phosphagen power and capacity decide whether brief maximal actions stay sharp — entries, first steps, explosive exchanges.

If rest is chronically incomplete, you may think you are training alactic power while actually training something else.

  • Protect intent with appropriate recovery when peak is the goal
  • Capacity and power are related but not identical
  • Sport still asks for these efforts late — when engine support allows

GLYCOLYTIC

HIGH OUTPUT UNDER FATIGUE IS TRAINABLE — AND MISUSED.

Glycolytic work raises the ability to produce under metabolic stress. Random “go hard for a minute” without standards often builds suffering tolerance instead of useful power/capacity.

Combat density and late-game field/court stretches often live here — but not every athlete’s limiter is glycolytic.

  • Name power vs capacity before adding volume
  • Quality collapse is a stopping signal, not a badge
  • Glycolytic pieces do not replace aerobic support or alactic peaks

OXIDATIVE SUPPORT

AEROBIC SUPPORT ENABLES REPEAT HIGH OUTPUT.

Oxidative / aerobic support is the reload system: between efforts, between rounds, between shifts. It is not “Zone 2 as a personality.”

Without support, peak work becomes a one-time event. With only easy volume and no high-output channels, sport density still fails.

  • Tempo and recovery behaviour are part of the engine
  • Support work should not chronically blunt required peak sessions
  • Field, court and combat all need reload — on different clocks

REPEAT HIGH-INTENSITY

ONE SPRINT IS NOT REPEAT-SPRINT ABILITY.

Repeated high-intensity ability is the bridge between single efforts and competition series under incomplete recovery.

Testing one max pull or one flying sprint can hide decay across a real sequence.

  • Incomplete rest is the point of the quality — when intended
  • Decay patterns matter more than a single best rep

FIGHT CARDIO / MMA

ROUNDS ARE A SCHEDULE — NOT A HASHTAG.

Fight cardio is sport-specific repeat-effort: explosive exchanges, clinch density, round structure and recovery between rounds.
