Feeling gassed may be the symptom. Posterior-chain control, knee capacity, force transfer, true engine channel deficits or power expression may be the constraint that must move first.

Gate 5 — Athletic Power — is about expressing force: starting power, RFD, ballistic and reactive qualities that create peak outputs.
Gate 2 — Athletic Engine — is about producing, recovering and repeating high output so those expressions still exist later in the bout, half or shift.
An athlete can look explosive in a fresh test and still be engine-limited when density rises. Confusing peak with repeat is how “I feel fit” becomes late-game collapse.

Limitation profiles
Where engines usually break.
Alactic-deficient
Short maximal efforts fade early or never reach true peak intent — phosphagen power/capacity under-trained or chronically under-rested.
Glycolytic-deficient
High-output quality collapses when metabolic stress rises — cannot hold force under lactic demand that sport still requires.
Aerobic-support-deficient
Recovery between efforts is slow; tempo base cannot reload the next high-output action — “cardio” may exist as junk volume without support for repeat force.
Repeat-output-deficient
One big effort looks fine; the third and seventh do not. Incomplete-recovery repeatability is the missing quality.
Fight-density-deficient
General fitness does not map to rounds, clinch density, explosive exchanges and between-round recovery that combat actually uses.
Sport-schedule conflict
Conditioning methods ignore the athlete’s real work:rest profile — combat intervals copied onto field athletes (or the reverse).
Peak / repeat confusion

STOPPING RULES
Stop or regress when output quality, technique or composure collapses beyond the session’s standard — more suffering is not more engine.
DENSITY MATCHES SPORT
Round length, shift length, exchange clusters and between-effort gaps should resemble the athlete’s real schedule when transfer is the goal.
TRANSFER IS EVIDENCE
Gym watts matter only if competition-shaped repeatability improves. Supporting Gates can still limit what the engine can express.

Phosphagen power and capacity decide whether brief maximal actions stay sharp — entries, first steps, explosive exchanges.
If rest is chronically incomplete, you may think you are training alactic power while actually training something else.

GLYCOLYTIC

Combat density and late-game field/court stretches often live here — but not every athlete’s limiter is glycolytic.

Without support, peak work becomes a one-time event. With only easy volume and no high-output channels, sport density still fails.
