Bovine vs Marine Collagen: What Athletes Need to Know for Joints & Tendons

Protein gets all the attention for muscle. But muscle attaches to tendons, which attach to bone — and that connective tissue is where a lot of athletic careers quietly break down. Collagen is the supplement aimed squarely at that often-neglected layer.

Here is how bovine and marine collagen compare, and what the research actually supports.

What Collagen Is

Collagen is the main structural protein in your tendons, ligaments, skin, cartilage, and bone. Supplemental collagen is "hydrolyzed" — broken into small peptides your gut can absorb. Those peptides deliver a high concentration of the specific amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) that connective tissue is built from.

This is the key distinction: collagen is not a great muscle-building protein (it lacks a full amino acid profile). Its value is structural — feeding the tissue that holds you together.

Bovine vs Marine: The Real Difference

Both are effective. The differences are practical:

  • Bovine collagen (from cattle hide/bone) is rich in Type I and Type III collagen — Type I dominates tendons, bone, and skin. It is widely available and typically cheaper.
  • Marine collagen (from fish skin/scales) is predominantly Type I, tends to have a smaller peptide size that some studies suggest absorbs efficiently, and is the choice for those avoiding beef or wanting a non-mammalian source.

For tendons, ligaments, and bone, both deliver the Type I building blocks that matter. Choose based on dietary preference, budget, and sourcing — not hype about one being dramatically superior.

What the Research Shows

The connective-tissue evidence is genuinely interesting:

  • Consuming ~15 g of vitamin C-enriched collagen/gelatin about an hour before exercise doubled a blood marker of collagen synthesis — pointing to real support for tendon and ligament repair (Shaw et al., 2017).
  • Collagen peptides combined with resistance training improved body composition and increased muscle strength more than training plus placebo, likely via connective-tissue and structural adaptations (Zdzieblik et al., 2015).

The standout practical finding: timing and vitamin C matter. Taking collagen with vitamin C shortly before loading the tissue appears to be the most effective protocol.

How to Take It

  • Dose: 10-15 g of hydrolyzed collagen peptides per day.
  • Timing for tendons: ~30-60 minutes before training that loads the target tissue.
  • Add vitamin C: ~50 mg or more alongside it (vitamin C is a cofactor for collagen synthesis).
  • Mixability: Both forms dissolve in coffee, water, or shakes. Marine can have a faint taste; flavored or bovine options avoid it.

Who It's For

Anyone with cranky joints or tendons, athletes in high-impact or high-volume sports, people coming back from connective-tissue injuries, and older trainees protecting joint and bone health. It is one of the few supplements aimed at the tissue that limits so many athletes.

How It Fits Your Training

Collagen is a tool inside a bigger resilience strategy. Supplements feed the tissue; progressive loading is what actually strengthens it. That is the premise behind The Knee Performance Standard — load tendons intelligently and give them the raw materials to adapt.
